Czarny Staw Gąsienicowy is the fourth largest lake in the Tatra Mountains, located at an altitude of 1624 meters above sea level, at the foot of Kościelec. This post-glacial lake, with its distinctive, dark sapphire color, is one of the most popular tourist destinations and an important stage on trails leading to high-mountain passes and peaks. The history of the place dates back to the beginnings of tourism in the Tatra Mountains, and nearby there is a boulder commemorating Mieczysław Karłowicz, a composer who tragically died there.
