The PTTK mountain hut at Polana Chochołowska (1148 m above sea level) is the largest facility of its kind in the Polish Tatra Mountains and serves as the main tourist base in the Chochołowska Valley. The current building was constructed between 1951 and 1953 on the site of a previous hut that was destroyed during World War II. Its history was further enriched by a visit from Pope John Paul II in 1983. This place is famous for the picturesque carpets of crocuses that bloom in spring on the meadow and is an excellent starting point for trails leading, among other places, to Grześ, Rakoń, and Wołowiec. A unique feature of the hut is its own hydroelectric power plant, which ensures its energy independence.
